Art for Spaces
I have never believed that art is there to fill an empty wall. I believe art changes the way we experience a place. A photograph can slow us down. A material can hold a memory. A landscape can make a room breathe differently.
For me, every commission begins long before I pick up a camera. It begins with curiosity. I want to understand the people who will live with the work.
The architecture.
The light throughout the day.
The history of the place.
The atmosphere that already exists.
Only then do I begin to think about the artwork.
Photography has been my language for more than thirty years, but it is rarely the final destination. Every project develops through materials, scale and space. Handmade Japanese paper, cotton paper, steel, aluminium, wood, ceramics and tactile surfaces are never chosen simply because they are beautiful. They become part of the story the artwork is telling.
I don’t believe people choose art because they need another picture on the wall. I think they recognise something; a memory, landscape or a feeling they cannot quite explain.
When that happens, the artwork has already begun its work.
Whether I create a single piece for a private home or develop a large-scale installation for a hotel, restaurant or public building, my ambition is always the same: To create work that people continue to discover. Not only on the first day but years later.
Art should never simply occupy a space.
It should become part of the life unfolding around it.
Every place has its own character.
Every project begins with a conversation.
